Why Do Dogs Eat Poop?

She did it neatly, the way she does most crimes, and then she looked up as if the walk could continue. Eating poop has a clinical name, coprophagia, and a reputation as the habit that ends people's patience. It is common. It is usually management plus a reason, not a dog who has decided to be disgusting on purpose.

Some of it is puppy behaviour that fades. Some of it is a medical problem wearing a gross costume. The costume is why people wait too long to ask.

Why a Dog Would Do This

Puppies Are Sampling the World

Young dogs investigate with the mouth. Other dogs' stools, and sometimes their own, get included. Mother dogs also clean up after very young puppies, so the behaviour is not an invention of badly raised pets. Most puppies drop it if you make it boring and unavailable. A few keep it because it kept working.

The Stool Is Interesting

Cat faeces, from a litter tray, is a classic. It smells like food to a dog, because it is partly undigested food. Horse manure and the leavings of a dog who eats a rich diet get the same review. This is appetite plus opportunity. It is not a comment on the quality of her own dinner, though a poor diet or underfeeding can make any calorie more attractive.

Something Is Wrong in the Gut

Suddenly starting, in an adult who never did it, deserves a vet before a lecture. Parasites, malabsorption, a pancreas that is not doing its job, and conditions that leave a dog very hungry can all show up this way. So can some medications and a diet that is not actually feeding her. Bring a note of what she eats, how fast she eats it, and whether the weight is changing. "She's greedy" is not a diagnosis.

Eating grass is the respectable cousin. Grass is often harmless. Faeces are a parasite delivery system. Treat the new habit as a clue, and treat the chronic puppy habit as training plus a stool check so you are not training over an infection.

What Actually Reduces It

Punishment after the fact does almost nothing. She has already been paid by the taste, and your anger arrives late, attached to you. Use the moment before:

  1. Pick up immediately. The least philosophical fix. A garden that is cleaned once a day is a buffet. A garden cleaned as she goes is a boring lawn.
  2. Leave the litter where she cannot go. A covered tray is not a lock. A room with a door is a lock. Cat faeces are the usual gateway drug in a mixed house.
  3. Call her off and pay the turn. A treat for leaving the pile beats a wrestle over an open mouth. Practise on boring piles first if you can do it without theatre.
  4. Feed enough, in meals she can finish. A dog who is genuinely hungry will shop elsewhere. Measure properly. A food toy slows a dog who inhales and then goes looking for a second course.
  5. Keep her with you at toilet time until the habit fades, so you are there for the second half of the event.
  6. Deworm on a vet's schedule, and bring a sample if the habit is new.

Products that claim to make stool taste worse are optional and uneven. They do not replace picking up. They also do not fix a dog who prefers the neighbour's dog's work, which your powder never reached.

Do not stick anything in her mouth as a lesson. You will teach her that hands are dangerous, and you will still have a dog who eats poop when you are not holding her.

Health You Can Catch, and Health She Can

Most of the time a dog who snacks this way does not collapse. The risks are still real: intestinal parasites, bacteria, and, if she eats the waste of animals who have been medicated, drugs that were not prescribed for her. Wash your hands. Keep her from kissing faces until you have decided how bothered you are, and be more bothered if the household includes a baby or someone with a weak immune system.

Call a vet promptly if eating stools arrives with weight loss, a starving appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, or a puppy who is doing it and also looks pot-bellied. Scooting and obsessive licking under the tail can travel with the same gut story or with anal glands. Mention all of it. People apologise for this symptom. Vets have heard it this week already.

Rolling in a smell is the other end of the same walk. One habit wears the news. The other eats it. You can interrupt both, and you should not expect either instinct to read your disgust and reform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will she grow out of it?

Many puppies do, if the garden stops being a buffet. An adult who has been paid for years will not grow out of a habit that still works. Remove the pay.

Does pineapple or a supplement stop it?

Maybe for some dogs, unreliably. Try management first. If you experiment with food additions, check with a vet so you are not adding sugar to a diet that was already muddled.

Is it because I scolded her for toileting indoors?

Sometimes a dog who was punished for pooing learns to hide the evidence by eating it. The fix is a boring, well-timed toilet trip and no drama at either end. Fear makes this worse. Calm pickup makes it dull.
