Dachshunds: A Long Back and a Full Set of Opinions

A Dachshund looks like a joke that learned to walk. Under the joke is a hound built to go down holes after badgers, with a spine that was asked to be both long and brave. People meet the silhouette first. The back, the bark, and the refusal to drop an argument arrive later.

They are funny, loyal, and much more dog than the length suggests. They are a poor choice if the plan was a quiet lapdog who never uses stairs.

Two Sizes, One Job

Smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired coats exist, and so do standard and miniature sizes. The job was the same: follow quarry underground, bark when they found it, and not give up. That is why a Dachshund in a flat will still announce the letterbox, excavate a cushion, and argue about coming in from the garden as if the garden contained a badger.

The stubbornness is not stupidity. They are hounds. A recall that works in the kitchen may evaporate when a scent is better than you. Train with food, keep sessions short, and do not expect a retriever's eagerness to please. Expect a small detective with a vote.

Miniatures are not automatically easier. They are lighter, which is kinder on a long back in one way and easier to drop in another. The spine problem does not shrink away just because the dog can fit in a bag.

The Back Is the Whole Point of Being Careful

Dachshunds are the poster breed for intervertebral disc disease. The long spine and short legs put real pressure on the discs, and a jump off the sofa is a common way for that pressure to become an emergency. Extra weight makes it more likely. So does breeding that prizes an even longer body.

Everyday protection is dull and worth starting as a puppy:

  • Ramps or steps to sofas and beds, before the flying dismount is a habit
  • No stairs as a sport. Carry her, or use a gate, especially while she is young
  • A lean body you can feel ribs under. A sausage shape is the cartoon. A barrel is a risk
  • Harness walks, so a yank is not concentrated on the neck and front assembly
  • Pick her up with a hand under the chest and a hand under the hindquarters, keeping the back level

Call a vet the same day if she cries, hunches, wobbles, drags a paw, or suddenly cannot jump into the car. Back pain in this breed is not a "see how she is on Monday" problem. Some cases need strict rest. Some need surgery. Waiting is how a limp becomes a dog who cannot walk.

This is the same category of care as a Corgi's long back, with a hound's personality bolted on. Cute structure is still structure.

Barking, Digging, and the Hole in the Logic

They bark because that was how the hunter knew where they were. A delivery, a dog across the street, and the crime of you being in another room can all qualify. Reward quiet, do not shout over the bark, and give the watching a finish line. Why a Yorkie barks is a different breed and the same doorbell.

Digging is the other half of the job. Flower beds, carpets, and the gap behind the sofa are all candidate tunnels. A dig box in the garden, a walk with actual sniffing, and a crate or pen when you cannot supervise will save more cushions than telling her she is naughty. She already knows. She has assessed the cushion and chosen the tunnel.

They can be sharp with strangers and with other dogs if nobody socialised the bravery. Small does not mean safe to let her "sort it out" at the park. A lead and a wide berth are allowed.

Who They Suit

A Dachshund suits someone who wants a close, comic, determined companion and will organise the house around the spine: ramps, gates, a weight you actually track. She is a bad match for a home of slippery stairs, a household that wants silence, or anyone who pictured a stuffed toy and got a hound.

They often live a good long while when the back is looked after, which means the cartoon years and the careful years are both on the receipt. Price insurance before you price the puppy. And if the appeal was a tiny dog with opinions, a Yorkie is a different spine and a different bill, listed in pros and cons of having a Yorkie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Dachshunds good apartment dogs?

Some are, if the barking is trained and the walks happen. A bored Dachshund becomes the building's commentator. Check the lease and the neighbours before you rely on the silhouette.

Can they use stairs at all?

Occasionally, slowly, as adults, is different from racing them daily as a puppy. Many owners carry them. That is not spoiling. That is the back.

Smooth, long-haired, or wire?

Meet them. Long-haired coats need brushing. Wires need hand-stripping if you want the coat to stay right. The spine advice does not change with the fur.
