A wet afternoon does not have to mean another hour of throwing a ball down the hallway. Turn a little of your dog's usual food into a search, and let their nose choose the pace. Wendi would like to point out that finding dinner is a very serious occupation.

Set Up a Small Search Area
Choose one quiet room with a non-slip floor. Put away anything your dog might swallow or knock over, and keep other pets outside for separate turns. Use a few pieces from their normal meal rather than adding a second dinner.
Stay with your dog. If they guard food around people, choose a different activity and get individual advice before trying food-search games.
Game 1: The Open-Floor Search
With your dog watching, place a few pieces of food on a clear patch of floor. Say “find it” once and let them investigate. This first round should feel almost ridiculously easy.
Next time, spread the pieces a little farther apart. Keep the search away from stairs, cables, and furniture gaps where a small dog could get stuck.
Game 2: Find the Favourite Toy
Let your dog see you put a favourite toy beside a chair. Invite them to find it, then celebrate with whatever they enjoy: a gentle game together or a food reward.
Gradually put the toy partly out of view. Choose a toy large enough that it cannot be swallowed, and do not hide it somewhere that encourages climbing or chewing furniture.
Game 3: The Two-Spot Choice
Place a food piece in one of two visible, accessible places, such as beside a washable mat or near an empty dog bed. Let your dog choose where to investigate. Change the location between rounds.
You do not need cups, sealed boxes, or an expensive puzzle. The interesting part is the search, not how elaborate the equipment looks.
Make Success Easy
If your dog walks away, the game is over for now. If they scratch, bark, or seem stuck, reveal the hiding place and make the next round easier. A few successful finds are a better ending than one impossible challenge.
Clear away leftover food afterwards. Keep opportunities for walks, rest, and social time too; this is one activity in the day, rather than the whole routine. For more ideas, see activities Yorkies enjoy.
